To achieve position movements with increments (or stop-motion effects in After Effects), we can create a position expression by taking the rounded value divided by our desired increment, then multiplying this back by it to return an output as our value. This spaces out our movement according to our chosen increment. When combined with keyframes set for motion, these expressions help modify increment variables to alter or increase stop-motion/increment effects as desired.

In this video example using images from Envato Elements, we will focus on just the X position. To increment it we create a variable called “inc”. Since we’re dealing with positions here, 0 corresponds to X while we can leave Y at 1 for an unchanged value (using equal sign). Finally we return an array of both positions.

Variable Increment will be set to 50. To do this, use Math.round(value[0]/inc);

Var y = value[1]; You could apply the same formula used to move the X position (changing to value[1]) to adjust the Y position accordingly.

To do this with rotation, an expression similar to that used for choosing increments would work well. Create a variable called “spin”, apply the expression and set key frames as desired; enjoy your incremental movement!

Var inc = 50 and Var Spin = Math.Round(Value/Inch);

Adjust the increment variable to speed or slow the movement.
