Adobe has given many of us the opportunity to test Adobe Firefly and their generative AI tools, with great results. Now they’re making Firefly available to all Creative Cloud subscribers; however, price changes may occur.

Adobe Firefly has been available in beta testing for some time. Now, all Creative Cloud subscribers can utilize it. Many photographers have been actively testing its capabilities through a beta version of Photoshop that included Generative Fill and Generative Expand capabilities from Firefly.

Photoshop 2024 (Version 25)
Few features in Photoshop have generated as much anticipation, discussion and debate as Generative Fill and Generative Expand have. Now available with Photoshop 2024 (Version 25.0), these tools are being enabled through Firefly technology and are both fully operational in this latest release of the software.

Are You Generative Fill and Generative Expand Users bumbac If you have used the beta version of Generative Fill and Generative Expand, chances are you are wondering whether or not it produces low-resolution images over 1024 pixels? Unfortunately, yes. I conducted numerous tests, with this as my primary concern. Adobe states they will offer higher resolution images in future (though with some restrictions…more about that later), while for now quiltwork patches under 1024 pixels wide are best served as work-around solutions.

Screenshot showing 100% view of Generative Expand creating a low-resolution image using Photoshop 2024 (v25). I was hopeful this situation would change; and, indeed, it will eventually; but not without cost as you will discover shortly.

Night scene created using Generative Expand from Photoshop 2024. I like that it determined where the moon should be and then placed one there! In this 1600px image, you can see the areas created by Generative Expand are of lower resolution than their surroundings – something which may change as time progresses, as you will read below.

Firefly offers various AI-based tools, such as Text to Image, Generative Fill and Text Effects. Many of us were introduced to Firefly through its use as a web application; now it’s also part of Illustrator and Adobe Express.

Creatie Cloud Pricing Changes Well, as expected. Adobe announced that their Creative Cloud subscription service pricing would increase on November 1, 2023 for North America, Central America, South America, and Europe regions; there are no changes outside these regions.

Creative Cloud for individual Single App Plans now include Generative Credits, Adobe Express and Firefly at an annual billed monthly option price of USD$22.99; there will also be a $2 increase to month-to-month billing (previously USD$31.49); while monthly billed options (formerly USD$34.49 per month) have seen their monthly bill increased by three dollars each month and by 24 dollars for annual prepayment plans (formerly USD$239.88 per year).
Creative Cloud for Individual All Apps Plan now offers Generative Credits, Adobe Express and Firefly; there is a USD$5 increase for the annual billed monthly option; previously USD$54.99 will now cost USD$59.99 monthly, as will month-to-month and annual prepaid options (originally USD$599.88 will become USD$659.88 respectively).
Creative Cloud for Teams now includes Generative Credits, Adobe Express and Firefly; there will be an increase of two dollars for single app plans (Pro Edition included) which were previously priced at USD$35.99 but will now increase to USD$37.99 monthly per license; additionally there is an increase of five dollars on All App plans with Pro Edition support.
Per license, Creative Cloud for Enterprise and Reseller Plans now costs USD$89.99 monthly with Generative Credits, Adobe Express and Firefly all now included in each plan.
Changes to enterprise plans depend on the terms of each membership agreement, and an Adobe account representative is always available to help customers understand any necessary modifications to your plan. Team and Enterprise customers who purchased software through reseller organizations should reach out directly for more information.

But first, some great news!
Certain Creative Cloud plans won’t increase in price come November 1. You may be pleased to know that if you own the Creative Cloud Photography Plan, its price won’t increase either!

Creative Cloud plans designed specifically for students, teachers and educational institutions remain unchanged. No changes were made to Adobe Acrobat plans, Adobe Stock plans, Adobe Substance plans or Creative Cloud Photography Plans as well as Adobe Express plans; there was also no modification made to mobile plans.
No changes were made for countries outside North America, Central America, South America and Europe.
But now to something that might cost more Now you want to learn about credits. Adobe offers monthly “Generative Credits”, and when these have run out you must purchase more. For the Creative Cloud Photography Plan this allowance was 250 prior to November 1 2023 or 100 thereafter; please click here for pricing of Generative Credits.

Remember when I said Adobe would offer higher-resolution generative AI features in the future, such as Generative Fill and Generative Expand? Unfortunately, these come at a cost, measured in terms of credits consumed.

Be assured that I will use some of my generative credits to report about all this for you, dear reader.

If you have thoughts about AI-generated art, Generative Fill, using AI to expand images with Generative Expand and/or Generative Credits’ new pricing scheme or where to find great tacos – please leave them in the comments!

Oh and yes – this is indeed a Milky Way photo taken at Double Arch in Arches National Park, Utah, using red lighting as part of my light painting technique.
